The Scattered People CD and web site were created
over a period of two years and involved many people from diverse sectors
of the Brisbane community. They gave their time, contributed their skills
and experience, and were united in their commitment to educating and raising
the awareness of the Australian public to the plight of refugee claimants.
It was not an easy time in which to address such an issue as during this
period many refugee claimants had their case for refugee status rejected
by RRT, and were either facing their last
review option, or were waiting to be deported. Despite these difficulties
the projects were created in an atmosphere of goodwill, and embodied with
the hope of all involved that they will make a difference.
We would like to thank the following people who
assisted in the development of the two projects.
The web site
First and foremost the refugee claimants
who contributed their stories:
- Omid-Arezo
- Aaron
- Rio Domio
- Rodrigo
- Kitende
- Ramona and Brenda
In offering to tell their stories they not only
relived their past, they also lived in fear of jeopardising their case
and being seen to criticise the Australian Government and the Department
of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.
The refugee claimants who participated in
the Scattered People illustration workshops and created images that have
been adapted for the web site:
- Omid "Iranian design" (image
for Iran Icon)
- Victor "Hands of Gold" (image
for the Forced Dependence theme)
- Ramona "Little Bird" (Image
for Escape theme)
- Brenda "Train" (Image for Seeking
Protection theme)
The staff and volunteers at the Refugee Claimants
Support Centre who supported the refugee claimants during a period of
enormous stress and continued to encourage and assist with the development
of the web site project.
