Most people in Australia don't realise how
lucky they are being born in Australia, and when they get to know
a refugee claimant they begin to recognise that. I still believe
that Australia is a land of hope, it is still a country which believes
in human rights, even though the current government doesn't seem
to respect them. We have to work together. We want a society that
has compassion, humanity, and dignity for our fellow human beings.
People come to Australia because they think Australia cares about
human rights. Don't turn that impression into a delusion.

The people who have understood where I am
coming from and tried to make me feel accepted give me a belief
that there are decent people in the world. People who care about
human beings as human beings, not as political, racial, religious,
economic stereotypes, that have been used to create conflict. I
offer my belief that people are much better not judging people by
what they're not, but by who they are. Let the person determine
their own destiny, give them a choice. I believe that's what you
call a 'fair go'.

Have you never stopped to think that those
of us who come here, like myself, we have come willing to work so
hard and to re-create our lives. We have so much to give. You see,
a refugee claimant isn't a person who is stupid or ignorant; it
is a person who perhaps has studied, has experienced other parts
of the world, other technologies, and can contribute our understanding
of other cultures. It has been proven throughout the whole story
of humanity that the people who are refugees and migrants are a
large part of contributing, supporting and building up countries.
