Aaron (China)

Here they have a very cruel and organised prejudice against refugee claimants. The media and this government have launched a systematic, consistent negative campaign and people in the general community have no choice but to believe it. They are saying that refugee claimants are a burden on society, that they are consuming Australia's resources, that they are using up quotas of the immigration programme. But under international treaties and conventions Australia has a duty to provide basic shelter and protection for these people. We are not queue jumpers - we are struggling with our lives.

Rio's Story Rio Domio (Africa)

I feel like we have gone back 100, maybe 200 years where those who have power can just do anything they want. I feel like the UN conventions on human rights just stays on paper. No one can secure that it is working, nobody is following it up, nobody is checking. Any government can do anything with it. You think there is law, you think there is justice, but when it comes to refugee claimants. I don't think there is any sympathy, it's just like 'Oh forget about them'.

There's nowhere that we can go now. At least if we get residency we could stay here and be safe, that would be one thing we wouldn't have to worry about, and gradually we can get over what we have experienced - but it would still take some time to heal. Each day there are things that remind you of things that have happened to you; what you see and experience, it's always there.
