Location 9: Banyo Seminary

Cnr Approach and Nudgee Roads, Banyo

The Pius XII Seminary has been the venue for the instruction for young men who are of the Roman Catholic faith and have the desire to enter the priesthood. The history of the site goes back to 8 September 1863, when the former Bishop, James Quinn, acquired the property.

During the late 1920s, Archbishop James Duhig began to plan for the erection of a seminary in Brisbane. At a meeting of Bishops on 2nd March 1939 the proposal was accepted. The foundation stone was laid on Sunday 19th November 1939.

The first 56 students entered on 22nd March 1941 and the formal opening of Pius XII Seminary took place on 27 April 1941.

A major decision was made 1988 to relocate the Australian Catholic University, from Mitchelton to the Seminary site. From 2003, in its new role as the Catholic University, it has provided a beautiful and serene campus for the many students who attend.
